The "Farmers Market" is alive and well... and it is "growing" (pun intended!) - this week there were some veggies along with meats, cheeses, Bonsai and other plants and blueberries. A few crafts and wooden goods were for sale and more are always welcome. The tomato vendor had mechanical problems, we're hoping next week proves better. I hear that a good supply of blueberries will be available next week. Will give you the latest as info becomes available.. Hours are 9 to 1, Wednesday, at the Hamilton Wharf parking lot.
If you have veggies, berries, other food items, crafts, flowers, etc, bring a table and give it a try - call Dick Demarais at 548-2868 or by email at radiosearsport@aol.com. The fee is $5 per space (payable to the town). Contact Dick before noon Tuesday and he will e-mail to everyone what you will be selling at the market on Wednesday.

I just tried a new restaurant that has just opened in the historic old brick Mariner's building with a fresh take on the old pub. Home made burgers, onion rings and fries are some of the regulars and a temporary menu is offering salads, pasta, fried clams, etc... the public has begun to clamor for more and they aim to deliver with a more complete menu coming soon. They will customize as well as possible for particular dietary preferences. The friendly atmosphere remains, along with a full bar and live entertainment (check for times). Call for more info: 548-6550

Visitors to Penobscot Marine Museum will have several opportunities to learn about the marine life of Penobscot Bay and touch a number of sea creatures this summer. Oceanographer Mike Dunn will present a program of marine life at 1:00 p.m. on Sundays: August 8 and August 29. Visitors will be invited to ask questions and hold some of the animals in the museum's "touch tank" marine aquarium.
In addition, the tank will be open every Thursday from 1:00 to 2:00 pm. A staff person will talk about the animals in the tank and allow visitors to hold and touch some of them. The touch tank is home to crabs, starfish, mollusks, a lobster, and other marine animals native to Penobscot Bay. It spends the winter at various elementary schools, providing learning opportunities to area students, and from May through October it is a feature of the museum's children's learning area known as the Marine Science Lab. Activities and exhibits for children and year-round adult programs make it a special place for family visits and history enthusiasts. Admission is free for Searsport residents. For more information, call 548-2529

The Carver Memorial Library building was dedicated in 1910. The sidewalk leading to the front steps, while not nearly as old as the building, was in need of replacement. The Town of Searsport has installed a beautiful new walkway, in perfect timing to mark our centennial year. To help defray the cost to the town, the library is selling personalized bricks that will line the edges of the walk. Buy a commemorative brick for yourself, or to pay tribute to someone (such as "In memory of........." or "In Honor of.........") The cost of each brick is $75.00, your donation is tax-deductible. Sample bricks are on display in the library and in the town office (1 Union St.) Contact the library for more information 548-2303.
On Thursday, October 13, 1910, the Carver Memorial Library was formally dedicated. A copper box containing records and various articles was tied with a white satin ribbon and placed in the corner stone where it was sealed and has remained for the last 100 years. This October, that copper box will be opened and a new time capsule will replace that one, to be opened on October 13, 2110. To commemorate the Centennial, library trustees are working on publications documenting the library's history. They need to hear from anyone who has photographs, stories, or information to share. Please call the library (548-2303) if you can help. You can also e-mail Priscilla King at pmking1221@myfairpoint.net or mail her at PO Box 203, Searsport, ME 04974.
