Searsport Elementary School News

Charlene Knox Farris, fifth grade teacher, sent in the following Searsport Elementary School news:
The SES PIE (Partners in Education) group is currently holding its annual fund raiser. Students will be sharing gift catalogs with family and friends, now until October 10, hoping to sell enough items to (1) win some nice prizes and (2) earn some much needed funds for the school year. The profits that the school makes from this fund raiser go to bring speakers, cultural programs, musical events and special "treats" to the students. In addition, each child receives a coupon for a free book from the school book fair in the spring. Adult volunteers are needed to assist with money counting for our fund raising event. If you could give an hour or two of your time, please come to the school on Thursday, October 16, beginning at 2 pm.

Community members are also reminded that Searsport Elementary School is once again collecting "Box Tops for Education" (bright pink official coupons appear on numerous grocery products), Hannaford certificates that come with grocery receipts at the check out counter and ink cartridges. All of these help the school to be able to buy things for the playground, the library and for classroom teachers to supplement their budgets. Please start collecting and send the items to school with any SES student that you know. Your kindness will be so much appreciated!

    Museum in the Streets

Museum in the Streets to Begin in Searsport - The Historic Preservation Committee is sponsoring a Museum in the Streets walking tour in Searsport. Searsport will join other towns along the coast and inland who have become part of a trail which encourages the public to consider that museums exist beyond the walls of traditional institutions. It is in the broader environment that so many objects of ordinary life first began.

The Searsport tour will consist of 15 strategically placed panels displaying vintage photographs accompanied by descriptive text. There will be a large introductory panel and brochures with maps that will be available in shops at no charge.

Panel topics will focus on notable places, people, and events relevant to Searsport history. A stroll along the streets will become a lesson in the history of Searsport and provide a visual experience that promotes common heritage and community identity. The tour is expected to be in place by September.

A project of this size involves considerable expense. It has received enthusiastic and generous financial support from the Maine Humanities Council, the Davis Family Trust and the Maine Community Foundation as well as the town and the Searsport Rotary Club. To meet the budget the Searsport Preservation Committee will welcome whatever further financial support community people can provide. A gift of $500 or more will sponsor one of the panels and will receive permanent acknowledgment on the panel and in tour brochures. Panel donors may wish to honor family members. All gifts are tax deductible to the full extent of the law. Direct inquiries to the Historic Preservation Committee, Town of Searsport, 1 Union Street, P.O.Box 499, Searsport, Maine 04974, Attn: Marie Underwood; or call 548-2439; or E-mail rbunderwood@verizon.net
