Literacy Volunteers

Ever thought about becoming a volunteer tutor with Literacy Volunteers of Waldo County? We hope to have tutors available in every community in Waldo County so adult students who want support, don't have to wait. Literacy Volunteers provides confidential services to adults who want to read or write better. Some students have a short-term goal of getting a driver's license, a long-term plan to complete a GED, or want to learn to read books to their children. An evening training session for tutors will begin on September 22nd in Belfast and will continue for 9 weeks, providing tutors with important information and skills to work with students. Contact Literacy Volunteers of Waldo County coordinator Patrick Walsh at 338-2200 ext 109 or pwalsh@brmaine.org for more information. LV Waldo County is a program of Broadreach Family & Community Services.

The Brick House

I just tried a new restaurant that has just opened in the historic old brick Mariner's building with a fresh take on the old pub. Home made burgers, onion rings and fries are some of the regulars and a temporary menu is offering salads, pasta, fried clams, etc... the public has begun to clamor for more and they aim to deliver with a more complete menu coming soon. They will customize as well as possible for particular dietary preferences. The friendly atmosphere remains, along with a full bar and live entertainment (check for times). Call for more info: 548-6550

Carver Memorial Library 100th Anniv.

The Carver Memorial Library building was dedicated in 1910. The sidewalk leading to the front steps, while not nearly as old as the building, was in need of replacement. The Town of Searsport has installed a beautiful new walkway, in perfect timing to mark our centennial year. To help defray the cost to the town, the library is selling personalized bricks that will line the edges of the walk. Buy a commemorative brick for yourself, or to pay tribute to someone (such as "In memory of........." or "In Honor of.........") The cost of each brick is $75.00, your donation is tax-deductible. Sample bricks are on display in the library and in the town office (1 Union St.) Contact the library for more information 548-2303.

On Thursday, October 13, 1910, the Carver Memorial Library was formally dedicated. A copper box containing records and various articles was tied with a white satin ribbon and placed in the corner stone where it was sealed and has remained for the last 100 years. This October, that copper box will be opened and a new time capsule will replace that one, to be opened on October 13, 2110. To commemorate the Centennial, library trustees are working on publications documenting the library's history. They need to hear from anyone who has photographs, stories, or information to share. Please call the library (548-2303) if you can help. You can also e-mail Priscilla King at pmking1221@myfairpoint.net or mail her at PO Box 203, Searsport, ME 04974.
